Design / FIELD GUIDE

Rich text editors need a reading experience too

A rich text editor is only half of a document feature. The saved result must also be easy to read, navigate and understand when the toolbar is no longer present.

The decision that matters

Define a small set of formatting options that match the document’s purpose. Headings, lists, emphasis, quotes and inline images cover many business workflows without exposing every possible style. Use a constrained document format and validate it on the server. The reader should preserve hierarchy and spacing rather than render the saved content as a dense block of text or a collection of arbitrary inline styles.

A practical scenario

A task brief may contain an outcome heading, acceptance criteria and a screenshot between two steps. The editing canvas should resemble the saved reading view closely enough that the author can predict the result. The image needs a useful description, and a long document should have a comfortable line length rather than stretch across a wide dashboard.

Before you ship

  • Test saved formatting after reloading the page.
  • Use meaningful heading levels and real list structures.
  • Keep photo descriptions visible or available as alternatives.

A useful next step

Create a representative document with headings, a list and an image. Review it on a narrow screen and with keyboard navigation. Improve the reading view and editor together; a powerful toolbar cannot compensate for a document that is difficult to consume.
